August 2019
About mid-august, I received an offer from a friend, offering me his old DIY metal trailer.
It had previously been used for his (2?) year old son, as a makeshift child trailer with a kid's seat in it. However his son evidently outgrew it, and he no longer had a use for it.
My plan was to utilise it to be strong, durable and able to carry heavy loads. I decided to make two wooden boxes, after welding reinforcements to the metal frame. The larger box, nearer to the front, would be quite tall and have a hinged, lockable lid. I also was planning to make the trailer somehow suitable for carrying passengers.

After a couple of days of woodwork, the turnout was pretty good. Most of it was sourced from scrap wood and pallets, and I didn't have to rebuild it at all. I even added a little carpet on the top, so the passenger can sit on top, holding the rope handles on the side. However, for small people we found it was easier to have them just sit inside the larger box, or on the inside of the lid, with legs inside:
The trailer is extremely heavy, but can carry a horse-load of luggage. It's successfully managed a few day's camping, and even managed an off-road day to the local city 15 miles away holding luggage, a person, and another bicycle! :)
So altogether a pretty good addition to my collection.
